i wore sun dresses with little buttons, & tiny printed flowers

i breathed everything in slowly, i moved like a doe

into the to & fro of

autumn, winter;

spring centered my

nymph-eyes & willow-sighs

i touched tiny pebbles & the bark on trees

played by lakes & grabbed at the sea

& they tell me it's all history, but i can't bear to

breathe that statement - i can't let them ensnare

who i am. i saw it all, & it's there - still restless

like the earth moving the sand

they tell me to get over it, but i can't

i'm in love with my childhood like a long-lost lover

one cries themselves to sleep over

IfWe can
draw lines and give them names
like elements
as they are discovered

Or etch into our skins
this soloecal desire
until it is impossible to tell
where words stop
and life begins.

I would

Find a common rhythm that includes
you in my arms, my hands
and lungs and thoughts
tracing the outline of you
entangled with me
colliding like two lost particles
locked in a shared gravity
drifting through the vacuum
of space.

remember

imaginaryoh darling, we will never be the same. in seven months i lost my jar of butterflies & glitter dust. now, i am rinsed in acid rain. in the wild i wore my antlered frame with pride beside the minnow lakes; i forced my legs to run with the wolves, but god, did i miscalculate.
we are never coming back, so let's put our formers to rest. i unveiled my baby flesh with liquor & sex sweat. i hear someone sing to me, & fall to me knees. beeswax & honey lifting me through the trees. my skin will never taste like saltwater. you'll never press your ear to me & hear the sea. i was your enigma, & you were my favorite mystery. but we are never returning, so

that car ride ruined some things
threw a wine bottle at the wall
15 years sitting
it was good enough or
it wasn't good enough

all the silence forced
my pride to jump out the window
if any rested in her
she showed it off like a speech bubble
tied it to her teeth
slammed it in the door
had it under her pillow for months
and years and years and years

there was no statement
there was no outstretched hand
just steering wheel clenching
knuckles white and jaw taut

(all because who i bed was not her mindful of
timeline perfection)

i still think i'm a tumor

respiration.i am shipwrecked fever;
kerosene sleep,
& she is denied oxygen.

i taste sirens on the shore
of her collarbones,
& salt-licked sea limbs.

but, it's the natural disaster
wrapped around her coral spine
that really has my lungs

you are crowthroated and tumbling
through the aspen grove
hair on fire with sunrise, lungs
full of sky.
eyelashes like wildflowers
and every morning brings
a new spray of freckles
and a sharper curve to your collarbones.
the cornfields hold no shadows
for your lighthouse eyes
and there are no endings in that
surefooted smile.
ii. you have grown
so fast.
autumn finds you with broken ankles
leaning on an oak branch
and watching the skies.
crow to sparrow--you are quiet.
summergirl, there is peace in silence,
perched treetop,
fallen antlers in your hands.
you will come to mourn your deer.
keep them close.
iii. by winter you have paled,
and like the streams
your eyes have frosted over.
you feel the chill--
there is no need for sight.

poseri want to fly,
i keep telling myself -
my head plays these words on repeat.
but my feet have retained
muscle memories
of all my old habits.

they scrape along the concrete
and i watch,
with head hanging low,
at the dust storms i'm creating.

as i breathe deep,
i pretend
there are feathers caught in my throat
causing me to cough.

i chase birds
and tear open
feather-stuffed pillows
adorning my skin with their quills.

and with a flailing of my arms
i leap -

asphalt always tastes
like defeat.

Liquid Cityhere, at the bottom - lovers.
there are lovers disassembling
themselveslost in and to the
desperate motion in
of - waves.

moved themselves? see them slip,

in an open sleep. less go, come.
come and, and - again. trembling

here, at the bottom - their eyes
are lightless. hollow bodies left
restless,

the sea does not sleep.

apatothe ocean air is selling
moist and salty caresses
there is a metaphor to take
in each skimming wave
but I am tired so I
so I will
will let it rest
my turning mind
with the tides
and breathe
with the gilled creatures
below the rhythmic surface
gulping gaping gas-gasping fish mouths
mine will open too and
open till wide enough
for the cry clenched in my
throat to caw-claw
its way out till I am
chorusing with the seagull
and if I fall
into the water now
it will envelop me
wrap its foam arms around
my corporeality
touch its crest to my head
kiss me dead
I will be complacent
in its sea indoctrination
this is how I will stay
above the darkness
infinite below me

shhhwe are lurking too close to jesus,
on the empty edge of a lightless stage,
curved nails digging into the skin of our pale palms.

he asks as an afterthought
do you believe in something holy? and i think yes,
i think this is what i believe in.

starspunobserving the romanticism
of hooded cemetery kids,
smoking cigarettes pretending
they are not dead.

you were always so sure
about my uncertainty,
you watched
all my pick up lines
drop things.

we built the heat
of the evening from the solidity
of starlight,

pretended
that two teens at the park
at midnight
is the stuff of teen novels
(cliches dim on
our leaf-gold horizon)

your eyes darted
from the gray expanse
of the churchyard & wandered
in thoughtful
paths.

i wanted to ask you
if i could follow. shove
the words aside &
remember that i came here alone.

i remember our innocence

for these star collapsed lungs.

I want to cry for her
& for me.

But Shame,
she wont allow me the courtesy.

the talk

of my

heart

unfurls,

wisps

of smoke

tangled in my voice,

strangled along your chest;

tonight we spend our seconds

deliquescing our desires

into wicks for flames

yet to be lit,

and still i dare seek the fumes

pressed in your stare- gasoline for my lips

to infuriate the stagnant caliber that is your

wish; dare for your fingers to ignite me

the ache in your moans to align me

a constellation in your mattress;

i wait for you to covet

your wants,

but you

and i flicker out;

a candle in the night
